Social studies can be a challenging subject for some students, but Mr. Pablico has developed ways to help everyone succeed. He explained that when students are struggling, “I tend to kind of see what kind of learner they are first. There’s not sort of like one approach for all of them”. By figuring out whether a student learns better through pictures, words, or other methods, he can adjust his teaching style to fit each person.
HOW DOES MR. PABLICO HELP STRUGGLING STUDENTS?
To make sure students actually understand the material and aren’t just memorizing, Mr. Pablico asks them to explain it back to him. “If they can actually teach it back to me, then I know they actually understood it”. This approach helps him see which students truly grasp the concepts.
MOTIVATION FOR STUDENTS
Keeping students motivated is another important part of his teaching. He said, “I always tap into their interests. I try to make it relevant to what kids know and understand”. By connecting lessons to pop culture, music, or letting students pick topics, he makes social studies more engaging.
THE IMPACT OF SOCIAL STUDIES
Finally, Mr. Pablico discussed the impact of social studies on the world. “Socials allows us to have those complicated, maybe even controversial conversations in a more safe environment... not make the same mistakes that we did in the past” . By learning to evaluate information, think critically, and discuss ideas, students gain skills that help them understand the world around them.
WHAT MR. PABLICOS CHALLANGES ARE
Currently, his students are learning about World War I and geography. Some of the biggest challenges students face in his class are literacy and critical thinking. “Kids find it hard to paraphrase certain things, critical thinking is the big one for me” . To help with this, he creates exercises that let students practice analyzing information and forming their own ideas.
In addition to learning about history and geography, students also gain important skills they can use in real life. They develop research skills, learn how to communicate information clearly, and improve their presentation skills. A common misconception students have about social studies is that it’s just about memorizing dates. Mr. Pablico explained, “Kids come in and they try to memorize every single day, every single year. But really it’s about understanding why that event happened and what caused that event to happen”.

Mr. Pablico’s approach shows that social studies is more than just memorizing facts it’s about understanding history, developing critical thinking, and learning how to communicate effectively. His methods help students succeed both in the classroom and in the real world.
