An article about chemistry

Ms. Molly Chen is a chemistry teacher in the science department, and I had the chance to interview her about her teaching methods and her classroom. When asked about the main focus of the chemistry unit, she said, “The chemistry unit will be learning about Lewis dot structures as well as balancing equations. So the students are going to be able to predict products whenever they're given reactants. Very useful in everyday life”.

INTRODUCTION

MS. CHENS CLASS ENVIROMENT

Creating a safe and positive classroom is very important for Ms. Chen. At the beginning of the unit, students learn how to work safely in the lab, where the first aid supplies are, and how to protect each other while working in teams. She also encourages a supportive environment where students feel comfortable learning together. “In our class, people really like science in general, but also it is always nice to support each other through learning different concepts or doing activities together”

HOW MS. CHEN DEALS WITH DISRUPTIONS AND DISAGREEMENTS

IS CHEMISTRY FUN?

Ms. Chen’s approach shows that chemistry can be challenging, fun, and meaningful. By combining safety, understanding, and personalized learning, she inspires students to enjoy chemistry and see how it relates to everyday life.

Ms. Chen also has ways to handle conflicts or disruptions. She believes that most students know how to behave, but she is always ready to help if anyone needs extra support. “If anyone needs additional support, I usually talk to them later on and then help resolve any conflicts that come up”. She checks student understanding through class discussions, review booklets, videos, and quizzes.

For students who need extra help, she encourages one-on-one sessions and offers her email for questions. “I want to make sure that they feel comfortable and safe and can get the answers they need

Learning chemistry with Ms. Chen is also fun and personal. Students work on assignments connected to their own lives, and the unit ends with a space project, allowing them to explore topics that interest them while applying what

they have learned. Her passion for science is clear in her teaching. “Chemistry has always been my favorite science. It is really fun to see students work together to solve a problem. The excitement that people feel when they finally understand something is so joyous for them and for me"
