FRENCH NEWS

A typical lesson in Ms. Chen’s class starts with grammar content, followed by speaking and listening activities. She described it this way: “Class activities involve only speaking French in class for a specific amount of time to get people comfortable with the language using specific themes. We also use worksheets so I can provide help if needed”.This combination of grammar practice and interactive activities helps students learn French in a practical way.

WHAT A LESSON LOOKS LIKE IN MS. CHENS CLASS

IS FRENCH FUN?

Ms. Chen finds learning French exciting because of the cultural and language exposure it provides. “It is interesting to be exposed to a new culture that is still part of Canada and to master a completely new language with a new set of grammar rules and pronunciation that is different from English”. While learning French can be fun, students do face challenges. Grammar is often the hardest part because it is very different from English. On the other hand, vocabulary is easier, especially when the words are similar to English. Certain verb tenses, like the future tense, also connect to English and are easier for students to understand.

Ms. Chen also shared some historical insights about why Canada speaks both English and French. “Both English and French settlers came to Canada. French came first but English eventually gained more control. English became widespread around the world, while French remained concentrated in parts of Canada and in some regions of Africa due to colonization”. Understanding this history helps students appreciate why learning French is still valuable in Canada today.

HOW CAN STUDENTS IMPROVE FRENCH OUTSIDE THE CLASS?

To help students improve outside the classroom, Ms. Chen recommends several learning techniques. She said, “Using a set amount of time to engage with French content outside of class, such as Duolingo, watching French movies or TV shows, reading books, and listening to French songs, is very effective. French journaling and practicing speaking with a friend also help”. She added that Duolingo is especially helpful because it provides daily reminders, allows students to join lessons with friends, and is easily accessible online.

Finally, Ms. Chen explained that Grade 10 French is more advanced than previous years. It is designed to prepare students for senior-level courses. “The most notable difference is that tests become worth more. Quizzes are 45 percent and the final is worth 25 percent instead of 20 percent like in Grade 8 and 9”. This ensures that students are ready for the increasing challenges of high school French.

Learning French in high school can open many opportunities, both for careers and for personal growth. According to Ms. Molly Chen, a French teacher, students who study French can look forward to a variety of career options. She explained, “Many government jobs, like engineering, healthcare, environmentalism, and public transit, often benefit from someone who speaks both of Canada’s official languages” . Speaking French also looks good on a resume, which can give students an advantage when applying for jobs.
