What Ms. Yun teaches

Biology is an important science subject because it helps students understand life and the world around them. In an interview with Ms. Yun, a science teacher, she explained what biology classes are like and why they matter to students. Ms. Yun has taught Life Sciences 11 and Anatomy and Physiology 12 in the past, and she currently teaches Science 8, 9, and 10, which all include biology topics.

The difference between Biology 11 & Biology 12
Ms. Yun explained that Life Sciences 11 focuses on evolution, plants, animals, and how organisms adapt to their environments. She said students “go through many different phyla, classes, and families of animals and plants.” In contrast, Anatomy and Physiology 12 is more focused on humans and how the body works.
Ms. Yun described it as a course that looks at “human anatomy and the different body systems.” This helps students understand how their own bodies function.
How can biology benefit us?
Biology connects to students’ futures and daily lives.
Ms. Yun explained that biology can lead to careers in healthcare, research, and animal-related fields. Even outside of careers, biology helps students understand health, nutrition, and the environment. She said biology helps students “appreciate the world and understand how living things and ecosystems interact.” Although some students find memorization and complex concepts challenging, Ms. Yun believes biology is about understanding how everything works together.

Overall, she believes biology is “super important” because learning about living things helps students understand life itself.

Why do students take biology?
Many students take biology because they are interested in science or need it for future careers. Ms. Yun said that “hopefully [students take it] because they have an interest in biology,” but others take it because it is required for science or health-related programs.

She also mentioned that biology feels very real because “you encounter living things every day,” which makes it easier for students to connect what they learn in class to real life.
What do students like about biology class?
One thing students enjoy most about biology, according to Ms. Yun, is how engaging the class is. She said students like “the cool videos that show animals and organisms you don’t usually see,” as well as labs and dissections. Some dissections include squid, frogs, rats, sea stars, and earthworms.
To keep students interested, Ms. Yun uses different teaching styles such as videos, discussions, projects, and hands on labs because “variety is key.”
